Ylitornio, nestled in the heart of the Finnish Lapland, is a captivating municipality defined by its location on the powerful, free-flowing Tornio River. It offers a unique blend of historical significance, rich nature, and distinct local culture, making it a wonderful destination year-round.

History and Description
Location and Identity: Ylitornio is located in the region of Lapland, along the Tornio River (known locally as Väylä, "The Lane"), directly opposite the Swedish town of Övertorneå. Historically, the area was a single parish, but the 1809 Hamina Treaty separated Finland from Sweden, creating the modern-day border along the river. This shared history means many local families have relatives across the border, and the culture remains strongly unified, often referred to as the Torne Valley culture.

Key Attraction: The municipality's most famous landmark is the Aavasaksa hill, a prominent, tree-covered vaara (fell) that rises 242 meters above sea level. Its motif is featured on the municipality's coat of arms, symbolizing the Midnight Sun.

Scientific History: Aavasaksa has an interesting place in the history of science. It was a crucial measurement point for the French mathematician and astronomer Pierre de Maupertuis in 1736–1737 to determine the exact shape of the Earth, and later for the Struve Geodetic Arc in 1831, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nature and Attractions
Ylitornio is a paradise for nature lovers, offering one of Finland's official national landscapes.

Aavasaksa Hill
The centerpiece of the area, Aavasaksa is one of the oldest real tourist destinations in Finland, especially known as the southernmost point in the country where you can reliably see the Midnight Sun during the summer solstice.

Imperial Lodge (Keisarinmaja): The oldest tourist-related building in Finland, built in 1882 in anticipation of a visit by Russian Emperor Alexander III (which was ultimately cancelled). Today, it often serves as a café or museum.

Observation Tower: A red brick tower built in 1969 offers magnificent panoramic views over the Tornio River Valley and the vast wilderness.

Monuments: You can find the Maupertuis monument and memorials to the area's literary figures, like the writer Annikki Kariniemi.

Rivers and Lakes
Tornio-Muonio River (Väylä): As the longest free-flowing river in Europe, it is renowned as a major salmon river, acting as a central source of food and a travel lane for centuries.

Lake Villages (Järvikylät): The northeast area of the municipality features a group of villages by large lakes, known for their peaceful, water-focused environment.

Bird Watching: The region has excellent bird-watching sites, including the towers at Portimojärvi, Iso Meltosjärvi, and Ahvenjärvi, which are key resting and nesting places for waterfowl and other species.

Typical Foods
The local cuisine is part of the broader Lappish and Torne Valley tradition, characterized by the use of local, pure ingredients like game, fish, and wild berries.

Reindeer Dishes: Sautéed reindeer (Poronkäristys) served with mashed potatoes and lingonberry sauce is a quintessential Lappish meal.

Fish: Given the Tornio River's bounty, salmon is a staple. Popular dishes include hearty and creamy salmon soup (Lohikeitto).

Sweets and Desserts: You should try cloudberries (often served with a dessert called leipäjuusto, or "squeaky cheese") and local pastries like kampanisu (a type of Finnish fried delicacy).

Local Cafés offer traditional pastries, including cinnamon rolls and other Finnish delicacies.
